As any parent out there will know, it is far too easy to accidentally lock your car while your keys are still inside – and when you add a newborn baby into the situation, it can make for a terrifying ordeal.

This was the case for a Northern Irish mum this week, who had to call on the emergency services when her seven-week-old baby ended up locked into her car.

The incident occurred in the car par of Tesco in Portstewart yesterday, after the woman's car keys fell onto the floor of her white Audi and the car's security system activated.

A team of five firefighters responded to the scene and, along with the help of concerned members of the public, they attempted to rescue the baby.

After breaking into the car through a rear window, the firefighters managed to retrieve the fallen keys using a length of wire.

Commenting after the incident, Commander Mark Smith of the Northern Irish Fire and Rescue Service said: “One appliance – with a crew of five – attended the incident at Tesco in Portstewart, where seven-week-old baby had become trapped inside her mother’s car. The keys had fallen inside the vehicle, and when the door was close, the security system had activated the locks.”

“We were able to release the door, and we’re delighted to have been able to reunite the baby with her mother,” he added.

Well done to all involved in the rescue.
