As our children’s internet safety becomes increasingly worrying, latest figures show just how vulnerable our kids are online.

Speaking to over 2,300 children between the ages of eight and 13 years old, Cyber Safe Ireland found that vast majority of them had social media profiles despite the age restrictions not allowing anyone over the age of 13 to sign up.

Nearly 20pc of those children spend more than four hours every day online.

However, possibly the most shocking statistic is the near 30pc of children who admit to talking with complete strangers online either often or every day.

64pc of teachers say they feel ill-equipped to teach internet safety to students according to a new report by children's internet safety charity.

With 84pc of teachers saying it is covered in their classrooms, most of them feel they are not educated enough on the subject to sufficiently teach it.

The charity is now recommending that teachers receive in-service training on the subject to encourage a healthy attitude towards social media.

“All children need to be empowered to use the internet in a safe and responsible manner,” says the report. “Internet safety needs to be addressed throughout the school year and across the curriculum.”
