We have unfortunately reported on a number of tragic incidents in recent months which saw the accidental abandment of children in family vehicles.

However, a new invention, which was released in the States on Thursday, hopes to prevent against the reoccurance of cases like these.

The Evenflo Advanced SensorSafe baby seat has been designed to alert parents to the presence of their children in the vehicle lest they leave them accidentally unattended.

The car seat, which is retailing for $149.98, is equipped with features which will alert a driver to the fact that the car's ignition has been turned off, but the infant's chest clip has not yet been unbuckled.

Hoping to combat against incidents which see the hospitalisation or demise of a child following a prolonged period in an overheated vehicle, Sarah McKinney, Walmart's director of corporate communications, said: "This car seat will eliminate the chance of a baby being forgotten in a car."

Revealing the startling statistics which led to the seat's development and design, she goes on to say: "Our hope is that no one would ever need the SensorSafe system, but the reality is that one child dies every nine days from being left behind in a vehicle."

The seat is dsigned to both remind the driver that an infant is on board upon arrival at the destination in addition to alerting the driver to changes in the chest clip during transit.
