From social life to the pressures of school, life is not easy for our children and young people, but these latest statistics offer some positivity for parents.

According to a new study released this week, young people are both happier and healthier than their counterparts from a decade ago.

The finding was made as part of a study into the wellbeing of adolescents across Europe and North America, with researchers looking at the lives of 11- to 15-year-olds from over 40 countries. The study was carried out across a 16-year period, from 1994 to 2010.

With underage drinking a key problem in Ireland over the past 20 years in particular, there is some encouraging information to be taken from the study.

Indeed, researchers marked a decline in the number of school-aged children drinking alcohol weekly, in comparison to their counterparts from 10 years ago.

It seems that school and social factors are still a considerable source of worry for our young people however, with the study showing an increase in the pressure from school work, as well as steady levels of bullying among our children.

On a larger scale, the study found that girls and older children, particularly those in the Northern European countries, experience lower levels of life satisfaction.
