Parents are splashing out more cash on communions, a survey has found.

The research conducted by Ulster Bank showed on average, parents dish out more than €860 on their child's big day.

The survey also revealed that children celebrating the day, are more inclined to spend the money they're gifted, than previous generations.

The numbers of children saving their money have dropped from 90 percent in 2016 to 77 percent this year.

Head of corporate affairs with Ulster Bank, Elizabeth Arnett, said getting your children into the habit of saving at this tender age is just as important as them enjoying the money.

"Most parents have a conversation with children about what they should do with their communion money, or if they get a large amount of birthday money, at this early point in a child's life.

It's an opportunity to say 'look, it's a party, a celebration and you can spend some money on nice things, but it's also important to look after that money'," she explained.

You never know when you need those extra pennies for a rainy day!
