​Gardaí in Co. Galway are appealing for witnesses to come forward following a road traffic accident yesterday which has claimed the life of one man and seen the hospitalisation of six others including a newborn baby.

According to emerging reports, the three-car collision involving a Toyota Aygo, Toyota Corolla and a Land Rover took place on the Headford to Glencorrib road at approximately 2pm.

It is understood that the driver of the Land Rover is in a serious condition in University Hospital Galway while others involved are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Commenting on the tragic incident which resulted in the death of a 20-year-old man, local Fianna Fáil councillor, Mary Hoade, said: "The community is very shocked by this. It's a terrible tragedy and my sympathies go out to the family of the person who was killed."

Taking a moment to focus on the others involved in the collision, she continued: "We're just hoping and praying the others who were injured will make a full recovery."
