Flying with children can be one of the most stressful things a parent endures, but sending them off on a plane on their own is just terrifying – which is exactly why we sympathise with this poor New Jersey mum.

Kathy Kirvan has blasted United Airlines after paying them to look after her son, only to find that they lost him after his flight.

Kathy sent 11-year-old Owen on a one-hour flight from Washington to Newark, to visit his grandparents. Naturally concerned about her son’s welfare as he travelled without her, she also paid a $300 “unaccompanied minor fee” for the airline to escort him.

However, no sooner had Owen landed than she began receiving text messages from him saying that there was no one waiting for him at the gate. Elsewhere, her father got in contact to inform her that he was given the wrong gate information and couldn’t find Owen.

Kathy revealed that her father approached customer service for help, but staff “made no attempt to track [Owen] down”.

“We were left on our own to find him,” she said, before adding that her father and son were finally reunited after half-an-hour’s worth of panicked telephone communication.

While relieved, Kathy is naturally outraged by the incident, telling local media: “Something could have happened. Someone could have easily come up to him posing as a representative and he would have followed.”

She has now filed complaints with the Department of Transportation and United Airlines, and is waiting to hear back.
