Headteacher Jane Edmands was found not guilty in court as she was cleared of assaulting a pupil of Burton Pidsea Primary School in Holderness.

Mrs Edmands was facing allegations that she dragged a child into a classroom when they wouldn’t leave their parents.

The child’s mother spoke at the one-day trial where she told the court that “Mrs Edmands came over and got hold of my child’s right wrist. She said ‘come on’ and pulled my child so my child’s feet were off the floor and toes dragging on the floor.

"I didn't know what to do, I was stunned at what had just happened in front of my face.

"By the time she got to the door of the classroom, my child's jumper had ridden up the back."

Later that day, the concerned mother called the school to make a complaint about Mrs Edmands actions.

She was quoted in Hull Daily Mail for saying: "I told her I was unhappy and that I did not expect her to treat my child like that and explained everything I had gone through with other staff members and the normal routine we had to make sure my child was OK when I left.

"Mrs Edmands said to me 'I'm sorry I have upset the apple cart'.

"From that I knew it wasn't enough of an apology, there was no regret from her, so I phoned East Riding Council."

Mrs Edmands was immediately suspended as police investigated the incident.

Defence solicitor Phillip Norris question the mother in court if she had actually seen Mrs Edmands grab her child’s wrist to which the mother said she had not.

During her questioning, Mrs Edmands defended her actions and shared her recollection of the incident.

"I did move fairly quickly, I didn't wait for the child to become fussy, it was a matter of seconds.

"I put one hand under the child's hand and another on the child's back and led the child from the cloakroom to the classroom.

"From previous experience it is best not to make a fuss and then the children settle quickly."

"Did you use excessive force?” asked Mr Norris.

"No, certainly not," replied Mrs Edmands.

In 30 minutes, magistrates had reached a conclusion and found Mrs Edmands not guilty of the charges.

"We cannot be sure Mrs Edmands assaulted the child.

"The prosecution witnesses were inconsistent and uncertain at times and did not corroborate against each other.

"We therefore find Mrs Edmands not guilty."
