A Welsh court has heard how a nurse ‘borrowed’ her friend’s baby and faked a DNA test as part of a ruse to convince a man that they had a child together.

Charmaine Wilson was reportedly angry after being jilted by Liam Griffiths following a drunken one-night stand, and concocted a plan to fool him into thinking that he had become a father.

As well as faking a DNA test and forging a birth certificate, Ms Wilson also ‘borrowed’ her friend's baby to convince Mr Griffiths that she was telling the truth.

She managed to keep up the stunt for six months, during which time Mr Griffiths and his family spent considerable money on presents for the child as well as a car for Ms Wilson.

Mr Griffiths finally learned the truth when a real relative of the child came across a photo of the pair on social media.

While Ms Wilson was initially sentenced to 16 weeks in prison for her actions, the court yesterday ruled that the punishment was “too harsh”.

Ms Wilson’s punishment was altered to a 32-week sentence, suspended for two years, on condition that she attend a victim awareness course.

Judge David Wynn Morgan was particularly damning in his judgment as he told Ms Wilson: “You have an immature and self-centred attitude. You failed to recognise the emotional impact of your forgery – your own hurt feelings took priority in your mind.”
