Shortly after Madeleine McCann disappeared from an apartment in Praia de Luz, Portugal in 2007, a Facebook and Twitter account called Find Madeleine were set up in a bid to bring the little girl home.

 

Sadly, however, the Twitter page has now been shut down due to “continuous abuse and negativity”.

 

The Find Madeleine account blocked the Find Ben Needham Twitter page recently due to Ben’s mum criticising the amount of money spent on the search for the then four-year-old compared to her own son and other missing children, and shortly afterwards removed the account entirely.

 

 

 

A statement posted on Facebook and shared on their Twitter page reads: “After talking with Kate and Gerry yesterday, we have decided to delete our Twitter account and focus on Facebook. They agree it's time to remove ourselves from a place that allows so much toxic content to be directed at us and does not permit us the ability to protect ourselves from people who want to damage the search for Madeleine.”

Admitting the move is to protect their search, the statement thanked those who continue to support their cause: “Thank you to all who come here to support our campaign and most of all Madeleine. SHE is what is important, and our job is to get her home.”
