The latest figures from the Department of the Environment have cemented homelessness as a major national issue, and one that the Peter McVerry Trust think needs to be declared a national emergency.

The figures revealed that a family became homeless every single day in February this year.

And the figures from Focus Ireland are even worse for March, revealing that 85 families became homeless last month in Dublin.

Mike Allen from Focus Ireland told Newstalk: "We celebrated the creation of the Irish state over the recent period of time, and one thing that the state should to be able to do - that the government ought be able to do - it shouldn't have to rely on the private sector to build the housing.”

“It can employ the workers, it can put the resources in to actually get these houses built. We need a lot of things immediately to deal with the crisis, but it's only going to be solved when we've got some affordable, decent housing," he added.

With these new figures taken into account, that means that 293 families, including roughly 600 children, became homeless in the first three months of this year alone.

And these figures are just for Dublin.

In just one week in February there were 912 families in this country who were homeless.

And this isn’t covering the thousands of families who are in emergency accommodation either.

Niamh Randall of the Simon Community told The Journal that the fact that close to 6,000 people are in emergency accommodation is "appalling”.

“We are now waiting over a month for a government to be formed to hopefully provide some leadership on this crisis,"

"A crisis whereby 5,881 people are trapped in emergency accommodation, are living in hostels, hotels and B & Bs; trying to get their children to school, to get homework done and meals cooked all in one small room.” she added.

“We desperately need short, medium, and long-term measures to increase housing supply and to prevent more people from becoming homeless.”
