A recent poll of UK parents has revealed that 20% of them admitted to leaving eight to nine-year-old children alone overnight.

The survey also showed that 10% have gone out for the night leaving their five to seven-year-olds without someone to look after them.

And more than 75% of parents admitted that they would leave a 16-year-old child or younger alone during the day.

Advice from British children’s charity, NSPCC says that children should never be left alone despite 75% of parents saying they would if they had leave the house.

“Children under the age of 12 are very rarely mature enough to cope with an emergency situation,” said spokesperson Lisa McCrindle

“So whilst they may be ok to leave watching the TV, if an emergency were to happen, they really shouldn’t be left alone for any significant period of time.”
