On Easter Sunday, the bodies of father and son, Sean Sweeney and Tyler Joyce, were discovered in a Dublin Canal after it is believed the pair took a shortcut through Ashington Park.

It is said that many people had used holes in fencing and a broken wall to make the journey between Ashinton and Pelletstown considerably shorter.

After the tragedy, Tyler’s mum Pamela pleaded for a bridge to be installed at the site as there was constant vandalism in order to make a shortcut.

"Why can't they make a little walkway? It's not going to cost them much," Pamela said at the time.

"If they do something then we could say that Tyler's life wasn't lost, because somebody else was saved."

Dublin City Council’s North West set up a committee to consider a report about the proposed bridge in the coming months.

However, the report already states that a footbridge had been planned at the location in addition to the new Pelletstown train station which is due to begin construction next year.

The plan includes two integrated footbridges including one that covers both the railway and the Royal Canal.

A temporary footbridge was considered by the council but it was said that funding would not cover the project.
