More than 40 brand new schools are to be established over the next four years - from 2019 - 2022 - to account for the growing population in Ireland, according to Education Minister Richard Bruton.
The Irish Independent reports today that the minister will announce the plans, which are to include 26 primary and 16 post-primary schools, primarily around Dublin but also around Cork, Meath and Kildare.
Four of the post-primary schools will open in 2019 – in Dublin, Galway city, Laytown, Meath and Wicklow.
While this announcement of new schools focuses on meeting the demand, also important will be deciding what patron body will run them, as this is a separate process
This process will be run in all of the new schools with parents to decide the patronage, via an online system which is under development.
Parents in a particular area will get to have a say in what the patronage of the school is, as part of the Minister's bid to end the baptism barrier.
The Education Department says it plans to continue to monitor areas where existing schools need expanding; 40% of new school places will come through extensions, according to the Irish Times.
