An Irish father-of-two died on Sunday after his car slipped on ice and collided with a barrier on his way to the shop to get milk.

Sean Maher of Ballinglen, Co Wicklow, was living in Calgary, Canada with his family but had hoped to move home to Wicklow in time for his twin boys to start primary school.

After the shocking news of his death, close family friend, Eimear O’Neill set up a fundraising page on Go Fund Me in order to help Sean’s partner Leane with the financial burden of traveling back to Ireland for his funeral.

"Sean was a loving partner and father of twin boys,” reads the description on Go Fund Me.

“The money will go directly to the family and will help them cover costs such as flights to and from Ireland, wage loss and funeral costs.”

With hundreds of people donating, the family have nearly met their target with over $44,000 raised in just 24 hours.

"Your donations are overwhelmingly generous. I cannot thank you enough,” Eimear said in a recent update.
