We have heard of some very dramatic childbirth scenarios, but this one takes it to a new level entirely.

A clever paramedic has revealed how he used Google Translate to help a woman to give birth at the side of the road.

Gerry McCann and his colleague Shane Mulcahy responded to an emergency call from a woman in Cork, Ireland, whose native language was Swahili.

Things took a dramatic turn, however, when it became clear that the baby was not going to hold out until they reached the hospital and, with the paramedics struggling to understand the woman’s language, they had a difficult situation on their hands.

Pulling over to the side of the road in their vehicle however, Gerry had an idea for how to make communication easier at this traumatic moment – Google Translate.

Taking out a device, Gerry managed to communicate to the Congolese woman that they were going to have to deliver her baby on the roadside, and she went on to welcome a healthy baby girl shortly after.

Commenting on the dramatic incident to local newspaper The Corkman, Gerry said: “It’s something that I think I won’t ever forget as I was translating Swahili into English somewhere on the side of the road between Macroom and Lissarda.”

We can’t imagine how stressful that situation was for all involved. Well done to quick-thinking Gerry!
