Facing into the certainty that you are going to lose your child is one of the most traumatic things any parent can go through, and it requires a lot of bravery to keep it together.

This is exactly what one US couple did for their five-year-old daughter Lila May Schow, who has only mere months to live.

Little Lila May has bravely battled cancer for the past three years, and her parents recently made the tough decision to stop treatment after doctors proclaimed her too weak to continue.

The Schow family wanted to do something truly special to mark their daughter’s fifth birthday, and decided to honour all of the milestones that she will sadly never get to experience.

Not only did Lila May’s recent party mark her birthday but also her high school prom, her wedding and every other major lifetime event.

Explaining the inspiration behind the party to Yahoo!, dad Ryan said: “At first, we just wanted to do a nice princess party, but we’re on limited time with Lila. We decided to give her that prom she’ll never see and that wedding day. And when Lila’s mom mentioned it in a post on Facebook, the response she got was insane.”

After hearing the news of their planned party, the Schow’s neighbours grouped together to donate their time, money and resources for Lila’s party.

The event truly was the celebration of a lifetime for Lila, whose party featured 200 guests, horse-drawn carriage rides, princesses, a banquet and a whopping six cakes.

Following the event, Lila’s mum Heidi took to Facebook to share photos of the event and thank everyone for making Lila’s dreams come true.

What a touching story. Our thoughts are with Lila’s family.
