The parents of a 10-year-old girl are outraged after her passport was denied because of her name.

Harriet Cardew’s passport renewal request was denied by officials as it is banned by Icelandic baby naming laws.

Up until now the 10-year-old had simply been named “Girl” on her passport, until it came time for a renewal.

Iceland has an approved list of 1,712 male names and 1,853 female names, of which Harriet does not appear.

According to baby naming laws in Iceland, all names submitted within six months of birth must comply to Icelandic orthography, grammatical endings and the linguistic structure of Iceland. Harriet’s father, Tristan, who is British, said: “That’s the problem with Harriet. It can’t be conjugated in Icelandic.”

The family have now applied to the British embassy in order to attempt to get an emergency UK passport so that they will not miss their upcoming trip to France.
