As mums we all try to teach our children about the dangers of the road and the importance of being vigilant when near them, but sometimes accidents happen.

However, one family in the UK are trying to reduce the number of road incidents by sharing a shocking picture of their son after he was hit by a van.

12-year-old Levi Hames was thrown 15ft in the air after he ran across the road and was hit by a van last week. The teen from Derbyshire was airlifted to hospital where he had to spend the night due to a bleed on the brain.

Talking about what happened to The Mirror, the teenager said: "One of my mates ran across the road. There were no cars coming from the left and when I crossed, I heard someone skidding and turned and suddenly saw the vehicle coming towards me.”

Explaining how the impact didn’t hurt him initially, the youngster said that he doesn’t blame the driver, instead taking responsibility for not looking.

The incident happened outside Levi’s school and when she received a call, his mum, Donna, thought he was dead.

"I'm surprised he didn't have any broken bones or anything more serious. He's very lucky," she said.

The family have subsequently released a photo of the youngster with cuts and bruises on his face in a bid to raise awareness to other kids of the dangers of the road.

Talking about the incident, Levi’s dad, Aaron, said: "Levi was saying in the ambulance 'I don't want to go to sleep because I'm scared I won't wake up'. It was terrifying.”

"If it was a car, he could have been thrown into the windscreen and been a lot more seriously injured," he added.
