Technology can be a wonderful thing, but when placed in the wrong hands it poses a very real danger to us and our families. This has been proven in a most frightening way this week, after a paedophile managed to hack into a group of children’s phone conversation.

According to a report in the Irish Examiner, a concerned Cork mum got in touch with local radio station RedFM to share her story and warn other parents to be vigilant.

The horrified mother revealed that her 12-year-old son and his primary school friends were conversing through the smartphone app ‘ooVoo’ – an instant messaging and video-calling app – when a naked man appeared and began making explicit gestures and requests.

The man, who claimed to be from France, is thought to have been in his fifties or sixties, while all of the children were around 11 or 12 years old.

‘Shaken’ by the incident, the children told their parents, and this mother acted immediately by getting her son a new SIM card and blocking the man in question. Frighteningly, however, that was not the last the little boy saw of the man.

Later that evening, the mother revealed that her son came to her to say that the stranger had managed to hack into his messages on the app yet again.

“We always tell our children about the dangers of the internet. I go through my child’s phone relentlessly a couple of times a week to make sure I know what he’s doing,” confirmed the mother.

She went on to urge parents to be vigilant, to monitor their children’s phone activity, and to act immediately if something similar occurs.
