Let's face it, the vast majority of us would attest that the development of the mobile phone has made life immeasurably easier on a lot of us, but, as we all know, they don't come without their pitfalls.

According to a recent study, frequent mobile phone use may be responsible for the decreasing quality of sperm evident in Western society today.

With sperm quality in a number of western countries raising alarm among experts in the field, a link has been drawn between the heat and electromagnetic activity connected with mobile phone use and the likelihood of experiencing fertility struggles.

Exploring the hypothesis that mobile phone use plays a role in a man's ability to procreate, scientists in Israel conducted a study of 106 men over the course of one year.

The participants, all of whom attended a fertility clinic for the purpose of the research, were monitored in an effort to establish the extent to which a man's phone can impact on his reproductive health.

According to the findings, the sperm levels of 47% of men who kept their phones within 20 inches of their groin were seriously affected compared to just 11 per cent of the general population.

Commenting on the results of the study which is likely to give many men pause for thought, Professor Martha Dirnfeld, of the Technion University in Haifa, said: "The sperm levels were down to a number that would make conception difficult."

‘If you are trying for a baby and it doesn’t happen within a year you might want to think of whether it could be your mobile phone habit that is to blame," she advised while revealing that the proximity to which a man charges his device at night may also be cause for alarm.

The study has been published in Reproductive BioMedicine.
