Need an operation but unwilling to pay for expensive ongoing private health insurance?

A new scheme, from company Letsbuyhealthcare, could allow patients on public waiting lists who don't have health insurance to register for private care on a 'once-off' basis.

The idea is that if patients register for free, the company will be able to negotiate with private hospitals to get a discounted price for operations such as a cataract operation or a new hip.

The Irish Independent reports that the managing director, David Allen, used to work as the head of finance at the National Treatment Purchase Fund which negotiates these packages on behalf of the health service.

He told the newspaper that there is strength in numbers and the more people who sign up for free, the more chance they will have of getting a good price for surgery.

With over 600,000 people currently on some sort of Irish public waiting list for procedures and treatment, this could be a game-changing scheme for the health service.

Patients will also be entitled to 20% tax relief and the package will also include aftercare. The company takes its commission at about 8% on the price of the package.
