An acclaimed photographer has expressed her outrage after Facebook banned one of her photos depicting breastfeeding mothers.

Jade Beall, who recently received high praise for her photographs celebrating women’s real bodies, was horrified after social media users complained the shot.

As a result, the photo was banned from Facebook, despite her having blurred out the nipples and genitals.

Commenting on the incident to Cosmopolitan magazine, Beall said: “I received many private messages (all from men) telling me I should remove the photo.”

Beall has been taking breastfeeding photos like the image banned from Facebook since her own pregnancy. Her own nude self-portrait sparked a desire to celebrate natural beauty with all its ‘flaws’, and her work went on to be published last year in a book entitled A Beautiful Body Project.

Speaking about the inspiration behind her work, she said that it is her goal to make women feel beautiful about their bodies, regardless of their shape or size.

“We are facing an epidemic of women who feel unworthy of being called beautiful…Shaming mothers for not ‘bouncing back’ after childbirth can cause feelings of failure when being a mother is challenging enough,” she added.

Given that Facebook recently revised their policy, we're a little confused as to why this photo would be banned. What are your thoughts?
