An Bord Pleanála is due to receive a planning application for the new National Paediatric Hospital later today.

Should the plans be granted, the new hospital will be established on the campus of St. James Hospital in Dublin following extensive consultation with staff, families and residents in the Dublin 8 area.

In addition to the proposed location, the document also contains plans which would see the establishment of outpatient departments and urgent satellite centres at hospitals in both Tallaght and Blanchardstown.

The decision to establish the new children's hospital on the grounds of St James' were established after An Bord Pleanála refused the same application for the grounds of the Mater Hospital in 2012.

The plan previously caused much consternation among residents in the area who feared traffic congestion and noise pollution should development go ahead.

It has been established that building work on the new new facility would begin next year at a cost of €650 million.
