Police officials have appealed to the public for assistance following a serious sexual assault which was carried out against a teenage girl in Belfast in the early hours of Saturday morning.

It is understood that the horrifying attack took place in the Woodvale Road and Woodvale Park area between 12.30 and 03,30 am on Saturday.

Providing the public with information which may assist in their enquiries, Detective Sergeant Mike Davis, said: "I am keen to hear from anyone who was in the area between these times and may have seen a girl, with long blonde hair, wearing a white short-sleeved dress and black shoes."

According to the Detective Sergeant from the PSNI Rape Crime Unit, it is understood that the girl was in the company of a male "who was wearing a dark waist length jacket, dark boot cut jeans and a dark baseball cap."

Urging anyone with information to come forward, he continued: "I would appeal to anyone with any information to contact Detectives at the Rape Crime Unit at Ladas Drive on the non-emergency number 101."

Offering an alternative to that approach, he said: "Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Our thoughts are with the teenage girl and her family at this incredibly difficult time.
