Police and emergency crews are fearing for the safety of a man whose kayak capsized on the river Wey in Surrey yesterday afternoon,

According to onlooker's reports, the kayaker went to the assistance of his 12-year-old son but was tragically overcome by the river's strong current and disappeared beneath the water.

While the child thankfully made it to safety, the man did not resurface leading emergency crews and search-and-rescue teams to scour the area where he was last seen.

Called to the scene at approximately 1pm on Easter Monday, the teams have been working tirelessly to locate the individual, but have been unable to find him thus far.

Commenting on the long weekend's tragic incident, Chief Inspector Dave Mason said: “We have a large number of officers out looking for this man alongside a number of fire crews."

“The man was spotted in the water by several members of the public and was clearly in difficulty due to the extremely strong current"< he confirmed. "We are doing everything we can to try and find him.”

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident.
