Sometimes we truly don't realise how lucky we are until we hear about the tragedies going on in others' lives, and the following story serves as an important reminder of that.

Police in Livermore, California gave fresh hope to a six-year-old girl who lost her mother last week, giving her the gift of a Christmas after her tragic loss.

According to a Facebook post, local police officers responded to an emergency call from a hotel, where a 39-year-old woman was unconscious. The woman is said to have been suffering with a medical condition and, tragically, she succumbed to her illness.

Even more devastating, was that the woman's six-year-old daughter was at the scene when authorities arrived. She was placed with a foster family until a relative came to be with her, and her situation deeply affected one of the responding officers, Dave Morris.

Recalling the scene, Morris told Today: "[She told me] Santa didn't come because Mum wouldn't wake up. It broke my heart."

Unable to get the little girl out of his head, Morris contacted his station and proposed that everyone there purchase a gift for her; by the next morning, the local fire service had pitched in, and Morris was given authorisation to get anything he wanted for the little girl.

As well as delivering 'a truckload' of gifts to her, the station went on to set up a Go Fund Me [link here] page for the tot, and so far thousands of dollars have been raised to help her.
