Following the hospitalisation of a child yesterday, police have issued a warning to parents regarding a new craze which sees children suffocate each other until they lose consciousness.

The game, known as 'Sleeper' involves placing a hand over a peer's nose and mouth and releasing it only when the child passes out.

Commenting on the dangerous nature of this activity, Greater Manchester Police have issued a statement on their Facebook page, saying: "We have received reports of a new craze called 'Sleeper'. This involves completely covering the mouth and nose of younger children until they completely pass out."

In an effort to prevent fatalities or further hospitalisations, police have urged parents to draw attention to the dangers associated with the activity, saying: "Please advise every child you know and warn them of the dangers, this could easily lead to concussion or even death."

Asserting that the game wasn't a new phenomenon, members of the public have responded to the warning, saying: "It's not new. It's been going on for years and years."

The condition of the child, who was recently hospitalised, has yet to be released.
