She is currently vying to become the next Prime Minister of Britain, but Andrea Leadsom’s campaign took a blow this weekend, following questionable comments she allegedly made about motherhood.

The Times set off something of a controversy by publishing an article about Ms Leadsom, in which they quoted her as saying that she is a better candidate – over rival Theresa May – because she is a mum.

The quote reads: “I feel that being a mum means you have a very real stake in the future of our country, a tangible stake.”

She is said to have added: "She [May] possibly has nieces, nephews, lots of people, but I have children, who are going to have children, who will directly be a part of what happens next.”

With the comments coming just days after Ms May opened up about not being able to have children with her husband, naturally, there was outcry over the comments.

However, while many have deemed the comments both insensitive and unprofessional, Ms Leadsom has hit out at The Times for publishing ‘the exact opposite of what she said’.

“This is despicable and hateful reporting. You must now provide the transcript – this is beyond disgusting,” tweeted Ms Leadsom.

Ms May has responded by urging Ms Leadsom to back her ‘clean campaign pledge’.
