Ladybird has announced plans to re-brand some of its best-loved children’s books to make them gender-neutral.

The company will be changing six of its books that refer specifically to ‘boy’ and ‘girl’ in the titles, in a bid to ensure that children are not influenced by gender when picking their reading material.

The decision came after the publisher was presented with a petition as part of the ‘Let Books Be Books’ campaign, which seeks to allow children pick and choose what kinds of stories interest them without gender bias.

A spokesman for Ladybird responded to the petition by saying: “At Ladybird, we certainly don’t want to be seen to be limiting children in any way. Out of literally hundreds of titles currently in print, we actually only have the six [gendered] titles you cite…so we offer a vast range for children and their parents.”

Books that will be revamped with gender-neutral titles include Favourite Fairy Tales for Girls, Favourite Stories for Boys and Sleeping Beauty
