The song tells us that everybody needs good neighbours, and this certainly turned out to be true for one Maryland family this week.

According to NBC Washington, two neighbours saved the lives of a man, woman and baby who were left stuck in their basement after a fire broke out in their home.

Sources claim that the fire broke out on the second floor of the house, blocking off access to the stairs. The only escape option for the family was the basement window, but the metal bars covering it prevented them from getting out.

Thankfully, neighbours Rick Belt and Leon Tage spotted the couple waving through the window and sprang into action to save their lives. The pair attached one end of a chain to the window bars, and the other to their truck; they then drove until the bars were pulled from the window.

The baby was the first to leave the house, being handed over to the men through the window. Police officers patrolling nearby came to the men’s assistance as they helped the two adults out of the house.

No injuries have been reported, and police are now said to be investigating the cause of the fire.

We are so relieved to hear that everyone was okay. Well done to these quick-thinking neighbours for their heroics.
