Oh Ireland, how you like to keep us guessing. In the space of any given day we can go from baking summery heat, to blustery cold wind, to torrential rain.

And while we love our little island’s glorious eccentricities, it’s NOT our favourite thing in the world when we’re trying to keep the kids entertained, particularly over the weekend and during the holidays.

So with that in mind we’ve compiled a list of genuinely useful tips to help you weather-proof the kiddos’ playtime:

1. Invest in quality rainwear

It’s great for kids to play outside whatever the weather, so top of your list should be a good quality waterproof rain jacket. We suggest getting one in a bigger size, so that when it’s cold you can layer up the woollies underneath it for warmth. Also, as in the space of a day you’ll likely be taking it on and off the kids numerous times, a good tip is to buy a light one that’s easy to fold up and tuck away in your bag. And don’t forget the wellies!

2. Layer, layer, layer

Layering your little ones’ clothes is one of best ways to prepare for the changeable weather. Think light layers like vests, long sleeved cotton tops and hoodies or cardigans. That, way not only are your little adventurers prepared for all weathers, they can take on and off their layers depending on how warm they get during play.

3. Always have a plan B

A good rule of thumb is to always have a back-up plan if the weather really doesn’t suit your planned activity. Nothing deflates the kids more than their fun day being spoiled by the rain, so think ahead and have alternative activities planned, like a stack of movies to watch, ingredients to bake cakes or craft supplies so they can get creative.

4. Discover Kindernauts!

For heaps of activity ideas all year round check out brilliant website Kindernauts, which has been created by the guys at Kinder Chocolate. The (free!) interactive site is a fantastic resource for parents, and with its attractive graphics and fun challenges your own little Kindernauts will love using it. And there’s even the opportunity to win a holiday, as well as cool personalised backpacks for your intrepid adventurers.

5. Take it indoors

Sometimes you don’t need to change the activity during adverse weather – just take it inside! For example, if you and the gang had your heart set on an autumnal picnic in the park and it starts lashing, just lay a blanket and some scattered cushions in the living room and have it indoors instead.

6. Plan multi-step activities

A clever way to make the most of the day, rain or shine, is to plan an activity – or as we like to call it, an adventure – that takes place outside and inside. For example, a trip to the beach for stones can end in painting the stones snugly at home, while a fun nature walk collecting leaves and flowers can end in crayon rubbings, paintings and drawings.
