In an age where children are appearing to eschew the written word in favour of hi-tech gadgets and multi-functional gizmos, one barber from Iowa has come up with a novel approach to pique children's interest in books.

By offering free haircuts to any child who is willing to read him a story during their visit to the barbers, Courtney Holmes hopes it will help reignite children's love of reading.

Courtney's heartwarming approach to the issue, which was part of the Get Back to School initiative, has a two-fold effect.

In addition to offering a captive audience for any child hoping to regale customers with their favourite storybook tale, Courtney's endeavour also offers financial assistance to parents struggling to make ends meet as they face into various back-to-school costs.

Opening up about his heartwarming offer, Courtney simply said: "I want to start something that wil help with their literacy."

Elaborating further still, the 45-year-old barber continued: "I want to put a book in their hands rather than have them in front of a computer."

What a fantastic initiative!
