A recent study has revealed that less than half of Irish parents read to their children most nights despite 84% of those surveyed admitting that they believe reading with their children acts as both a bonding and educational endeavour.

The research which was carried out by St.Michael's House, an organisation which provides services for intellectually-disabled adults and children, also showed that 10% of parents never read to their children.

With World Book Week taking place next month, St. Michael's House is urging parents across the country to make time to read to their children.

The charity is hoping to raise money by running a fundraising campaign called Bring A Book, Buy A Book where schools, businesses and communities are encouraged to donate second hand books which can then be sold for €2.
