According to emerging reports today, religion may no longer feature as part of the State’s core curriculum at primary school level.

Under potential new proposals, primary schools will be given the freedom to devote more time to subjects like English, Irish and Maths while religion will be focussed on during 'flexible time'.

According to The Irish Times, the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) says a minimum of 60 per cent of the school day could be set aside for teaching the core curriculum while the remaining 40 per cent will be divided between roll call, assembly, breaks, and discretionary curriculum time.

It is understood that the potential reforms, which help form a blueprint for major structural reforms within Irish primary schools, are loosely based on some elements of top-performing education systems in countries such as Finland.

As it stands, Irish primary schools spend, on average, two and a half hours on religion every week.
