While there's no doubt that transgenderism has been a lived experience for thousands of people for innumerable decades, the bravery of high-profile figures such as former Olympian, Caitlyn Jenner, and acclaimed actress, Laverne Cox, has done much to raise awareness of trans people and ultimately pushed discussion into the mainstream.

And with numerous trans children and adolescents displaying admirable courage on a daily basis, The Huffington Post conducted a poll with people in the UK in an effort to gain an insight into a parents' perspective of the issue.

The YouGov research surveyed 1,672 people and ascertained that the majority of those polled would be supportive if their child made the decision to change sex.

However, despite the fact that 69% of people asserted that they would support their child in such an instance, 10% admitted they wouldn't while 21% revealed they were not sure how they would feel or react.

The results indicate a disparity between age and acceptance, with 47% of those aged between 18 and 24 revealing they would accept their child's decision, while only 17% of those over 60 could assert the same.

Geographical location also appeared to play a part, with the poll indicating that the nation's capital would be the least approving in such circumstances, with 41% of Londoners admitting they would be unhappy if faced with a child who wishes to transition.

The poll was part of HuffPost UK TransBritain series
