A report recently released by the Road Safety Authority indicates that a staggering percentage of the public are prepared to drive under the influence if they are confident they won't get caught.

Seeking to establish the public's approach to the practice, a Behaviour and Attitudes survey was conducted which ultimately revealed that 8% of the public are willing to get behind the wheel despite having consumed alcohol.

Commenting on the worrying issue, RSA chief executive, Moyah Murdock, told RTÉ: "Some 8% of drivers that we surveyed are still admitting to drink driving so that also confirms our concerns that people readily admit to drinking and driving to an unacceptable level."

"When we surveyed people out there, there is, unfortunately, still a perception that there isn't enough garda enforcement and people as a consequence will take chances," she asserted while also highlighting the younger generation's role in the practice.

Shedding light on the issue, she continued: "It's a myth that younger people are not doing this and our survey would indicate that there has been a significant increase in the number of people under the age of 25 who admit to drinking."

With the gardaí confirming that drivers under the age of 30 are indeed engaging in the exceedingly dangerous practice, Ms. Murdock said: "We are trying to get the message out there for people to be under no illusion, if you do do this, you will be caught."
