A family who had been told that organs had become available for their ill child in Madrid were denied entry to a Ryanair flight after being informed that they had arrived to the departure lounge too late to facilitate boarding.

The family from Gran Canaria had been contacted by La Paz hospital in Madrid with the good news, but upon attempting to make their way to the Spanish city with Ryanair they were told they would not be accommodated.

Despite being informed of the circumstances surrounding the trip, the airline refused to bend the rules for the devastated family and they were forced to wait over an hour for another flight to the capital.

Despite boarding a flight with Air Europa 70 minutes after being refused entry onto the Ryanair flight, it was uncertain as to whether the organs would still be viable due to the delay.

Commenting on the incident which was said to have caused 'hours of anguish' by hospital officials, a spokesman for Ryanair said: "We have looked into this matter and, unfortunately, we were unable to accommodate this family on to our flight as it was too close to the departure time.We have offered full assistance to the family regarding their flight requirements."

The condition of the boy, who required a kidney and liver donor, has not been revealed.
