So many couples go through the foreign surrogacy process without a hitch, but two American dads are currently enduring a ‘nightmare’ ordeal as they fight to bring their baby home.

Gordon Lake and Manuel Santos have spent the past six months stuck in Thailand, after the surrogate carrying their daughter refused to sign the papers necessary to allow her to be brought to the US.

The couple opened up about their experience this week, telling ABC News that they vow to remain in Thailand until they can bring their daughter Carmen back home.

The fathers, who previously welcomed son Alvaro with a surrogate in India, revealed that there were no issues with the process until the mother found out that Lake was married to a man.

“We got a message from our surrogate mother’s translator saying that she wanted to keep Carmen. The initial message did not say anything about why,” he said.

However, the woman went on to confirm that she was refusing to sign the papers because Lake’s and Santos’ is not an “ordinary family”.

The couple have been working with the US embassy, who have granted Carmen citizenship, but officials have not been able to do any more for the family.

Meanwhile, new Thai legislation banning foreign couples from using surrogates in Thailand may make things even more difficult for the family, despite the fact that Carmen was born before its passing.

The couple have refused to share the details of their location in Thailand, for fear that someone might come and take their daughter away.

In a defiant new statement, Lake said: “We are not going to leave Carmen. She is our daughter and we are confident that one way or another we will eventually be able to take her home.”
