Caring for our children when they're feeling poorly can be scary, but it's just as difficult when our parents fall ill, too.

Sarah Michelle Gellar knows how tough it is to look after an ailing parent. Her mum Rosellen recently caught the flu, so the Buffy the Vampire Slayer star stayed by her mother's side until she was well.

"So this throwback isn’t just a random picture, but a thank you," the mum-of-two shared with her 1.8M Insta followers, along with a picture of her dressed as a nurse.

"I’m sure you have all noticed, that I have barely been on social media these last two weeks. Unfortunately my poor mother, like so many in America this season, got sick and has had to be in the hospital."

#throwbackthursday so this throwback isn’t just a random picture, but a thank you. I’m sure you have all noticed, that I have barely been on social media these last two weeks. Unfortunately my poor mother, like so many in America this season, got sick and has had to be in the hospital. As an only child, this is never easy. She was surrounded by amazing doctors, and after 12 days is thankfully home and on the mend. But this thank you, is to all the incredible nurses, who not only tirelessly and selflessly took care of her, but also took care of me. I am in awe and am extreme grateful to your dedication. This flu season is no joke people, so please take every precaution you can (flu shot, masks, hand washing, hazmat suit- ok that last one was a joke) I now have bronchitis and a cold, but am hopeful that I will be back running at my usual full speed by next week. Wishing health to all  #tbt

In the States, this flu season has been one of the worst in recent years. Flu activity is widespread in every state except for Hawaii.

The actress found it especially difficult when her mother was sent to hospital with the flu, as she is an only child. However, the medical team helping her mum were incredible, the Scooby-Doo star shared.

"She was surrounded by amazing doctors, and after 12 days is thankfully home and on the mend. But this thank you is to all the incredible nurses, who not only tirelessly and selflessly took care of her, but also took care of me."

How sweet! Healthcare professionals really do care for the whole family, not just the patient.

"I am in awe and am extremely grateful for your dedication," the actress said admiringly.

"This flu season is no joke people, so please take every precaution you can (flu shot, masks, hand washing, hazmat suit- ok that last one was a joke)."

"I now have bronchitis and a cold, but am hopeful that I will be back running at my usual full speed by next week. Wishing health to all," the 40-year-old ended her note.

We are glad Rosellen is feeling better, and we wish Sarah Michelle a speedy recovery.

And we hope you all stay healthy out there, mums!
