13-year-old Natalia Kalisz has been awarded a certificate of bravery after she sprung into action and called emergency services in a move which saved the lives of an entire family.

The teenager was returning home from school when she happened upon a house engulfed in smoke on Barking Road in East Ham.

Finding 53-year-old mum Hozan Ibrahim outside in a state of distress, Natalia quickly ascertained that the woman's children were trapped inside the burning building.

Natalia knew time was of the essence and immediately contacted emergency services before being assisted by 26-year-old Sanjay Singh who risked his own life to rescue Hozan's children Jamilla and Haroon.

Commenting on the incident, modest Natalia said: "I've been taught to love my neighbours and I wanted to do what I could."

Recalling how she attempted to comfort the family in the aftermath of the terrifying event, Natalia said: "After the man rescued the children I stayed with them and the mum until the ambulance arrived."

Praised by firefighters for her quick thinking, Natalia realised the incident may have had a very different outcome, admitting: "As I was walking away the fireman stopped me to tell me how good it was that I raised the alarm. If i hadn't called when I did, the incident could have been a lot worse."

Opening up about her daughter's frightening experience, proud mum Karolina said: "She's a very brave girl and she is able to control her emotions which is important in these kind of situations."

Thankfully no one involved in the incident was injured.
