A huge search operation has begun after a seven-year-old boy was left in the woods by his parents as ‘punishment’.

The little boy got lost after his parents decided to discipline him by leaving him in the woods to teach him a lesson.

The parents left the boy in northern Hokkaido in Japan, an area which is renowned for its high population of wild bears.

The boy had reportedly been throwing stones at cars and people while at a nearby park leading to his parent’s punishment.

The boy’s father said:

"I wanted to discipline him, so made him get out of the car to scare him a bit.

"He's an active, lively boy, but I'm worried how he's doing."

When the parents returned after five minutes their son had disappeared into the woods.

Immediately calling the authorities for help, the parents lied and said he had got lost while the family were looking for vegetables.

The couple said they had noticed he was no longer with them after they had walked further on the path and claimed this was then they realised their son was missing.

Defending their decision to lie, the father said he ‘did not dare’ tell the truth of what had happened in fear that authorities would not be as willing to search.

There is now a huge manhunt underway as over 130 emergency workers, family and locals are searching the area where the boy disappeared two days ago.

The story has been shared by news outlets around the world and has become huge news as people question the decision of the boy’s parents.
