Seiko launch Save the Ocean collection inspired by sea explorer

Environmental concerns are steadily on the rise as statistics of global warming display the immense damage being inflicted on the ocean.

Sustainable fashion is becoming more and more popular as the world's inhabitants try to grapple with the impact which we make on the earth, through pollution and our carbon footprint.

Seiko are a global watch brand who are one of the many big companies putting their money where their mouth is and supporting environmental causes.

They have now created a partnership with distinguished ocean explorer and marine conservationist, Fabien Cousteau, the grandson of a world famous explorer.

Fabien is a third-generation ocean explorer who started diving as a young child, following in the footsteps of his grandfather Jacques-Yves Cousteau.

As well as co-inventing the breathe-on-demand valve for Scuba diving, Jacques-Yves Cousteau also led hundreds of marine expeditions and went on to make three Oscar winning documentaries.

You could definitely say that the ocean runs in Fabien's blood. In 2014, he led the record-breaking research project Mission 31 during which Fabien and his team lived in an underwater habitat for an unbelievable 31 consecutive days.

Who better to represent Seiko in their initiative to create ocean research?

Their special edition “Save the Ocean” Prospex collection will see a portion of the proceeds from sales donated to the non-profit Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Centre.

The centre works towards raising awareness of ways to preserve and protect the planets waters and endangered marine life, which is a massively important topic in the modern world.

“Planet Earth's last frontier: it's the ocean. We’ve explored less than 5% of our ocean world to date in any capacity. So we have a lot left to discover, whether it's architeuthis, the giant squid, or some other creature, or some other phenomena underwater, or resources, or just the very underpinnings of what makes human beings possible."

"So for me, it's very exciting to have a mysterious place: an alien environment right here at our fingertips.”

Oceans contain the greatest diversity of life on Earth, humans also rely on them for vital natural resources. For example, fishing is the principal livelihood for over 200 million people.

Seiko's new range offers stunning watches, as well as doing their share for the earth's polluted waters. Definitely keep it in mind as a gift this Christmas; Ireland is surrounded by water so we owe it to ourselves to keep it sustained.
