A mother who was diagnosed with cancer made the difficult decision to distance herself from her daughter in the months before her death a few weeks ago.

Joey Feek, who was one half of the American country duo Joey& Rory with her husband, was diagnosed with cervical cancer in June 2014.

After undergoing a surgery which got rid of the cancer for a short period, the musician then underwent treatment when the cancer came back later that year.

It was in October of last year that Joey announced that she would no longer undergo treatment, and had instead chosen to go home to be with her family.

She made the decision to lessen her relationship with her two-year-old daughter so as to make it easier for her when she was gone.

Until that point, her husband said, Joey was "Indy's whole world. Everyone else was... well, just everyone else. Including me".

Rory praised his wife's "selfless actions" and reminded everyone of her intentions by saying: "She carried the pain on her own shoulders, to try and keep it off of mine. And even more so, off of Indy's".

Joey sadly died on March 4th surrounded by her loving family.

Rory has continued to post in the weeks since his wife's passing, saying: "Indy has not asked for her mama. Not one single time since Joey’s been gone,"

He perfectly sums up this story in one line:

“It’s almost as if she hasn’t noticed that she’s not here. And that is so sad… and oh, so wonderful – all at the same time.”
