There was shock and sadness when news emerged that Jim Carrey’s girlfriend Cathriona White had passed away at just 30 years of age.
Cathriona’s mum, Brigid Sweetman, has now spoken out about the tragedy for the first time, explaining how she couldn’t believe it when she learned that her daughter had taken her own life.
"When I heard she died like that, I couldn't believe it. Cathriona was born just 2lb 2oz, and she had to fight so hard to live and I had to fight so hard to keep her alive,” the 55-year-old told People magazine.
“A baby that size takes a lot of loving to pull through. But she did, and from then on, she fought for everything.”
Brigid explained how Cathriona, who had an on/off relationship with actor Jim Carrey for three years, loved living in LA and had planned on staying there.
“She said she loved her work and the weather there, that it was summer all year round."
The Tipperary native, who was also an aspiring actress, had reportedly been married to an LA-based cameraman at the time of her death.
Adding that they had had an argument before her daughter’s passing, Brigid explained that it was “over nothing” but it was hard to resolve things when “your daughter is on the other side of the Atlantic”.
"She was loved, she was so loved and I know she knew that."
