In the wake of an alleged sexual assault against a 12-year-old girl in London's Liverpool Street station, police launched an investigation which led to the arrest of an unnamed individual.

Following the police appeal this weekend, a 30-year-old man has handed himself over to authorities.

According to reports, a 12-year-old girl was assaulted from behind as she made her way though the busy station with her family at the weekend.

Having been confronted by the child's mother and older brother, the assailant fled the scene sparking a public appeal by City Police.

Commenting on the incident, a spokeswoman for City Police said: "Following a City of London Police appeal, a 30-year-old-man handed himself in on Sunday 5 July at Bishopsgate Police Station."

Revealing further details of the case, she went on to say: "He was arrested on suspicion of a sexual assault. He has since been bailed until September."
