Gardaí have been called to an apartment block in Dublin city following the discovery of Class-A drug paraphernalia in the hallway of a complex in Smithfield.

According to reports, numerous items including syringes, rubbers bands and a bag containing heroin were discarded in the communal area of the residential site.

Commenting on the shocking discovery, a resident expressed surprise considering the apartment block's security system, saying: "The landing area is the main stair well to the apartment block and is locked using a security key so I don't know how they got in."

While insisting this was the first such discovery during his two years living within the gated complex, the man did express concern considering the number of children who live in the building and play in its surroundings.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, he elaborated on the frightening discovery, saying: "There was used syringes, surgical sterilized swabs, medicine bottles,  a mini weighing scales, what looked like a belt and other bits that one would assume a heroin addict would use."

The items have since been disposed of by members of the an Garda Siochana.
