Gardaí in Limerick have sealed off an area between Athlunkard Boat Club and Lee Estate today following a shocking attack on two primary school children this morning.

According to reports, the two girls were making their way to school when they were accosted by an armed man who stole the childrens' money and mobile phones.

Condemning the incident, former mayor of Limerick and Independent councillor, John Gilligan, expressed disgust over this morning's heartwrenching incident, saying: "We have scumbags here who would prey on anyone, young and old or the vulnerable, we can't let this happen again."

Highlighting an inconsistency with the council's priorities, he continued: "Here we have two schoolgirls mugged on their way to school, and the city council is spending €10m on doing up the walkway, and we don't have any CCTV on it."

"The area is used by people as a shortcut, and for years I've begged the authorities for a camera to be placed there" he asserted. "If only to try to prevent this from happening again, we need that camera."

It has been established that a man, who is understood to be from the Ballinacurra Weston area of the city, was arrested following the altercation, and is currently being held at Mayorstone garda station.
