A 37-year-old mother from Kent has appeared in front of Maidstone Crown Court after police discovered 12 packets of cocaine following a raid in her home.

Nicola Austen, who had purchased the drug in order to provide her daughter with a 'good time' on her 18th birthday, has been spared jail on account of the possible implications it may have on her young son.

The court heard that the drugs were to be 'consumed over the course of the weekend', with prosecutor, Craig Evans, explaining: "They [Nicola and her daughter] were going to London in a limousine and she wanted to make sure they had a good time."

The mother, who has six previous convictions including amphetamine possession, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply and was subsequently sentenced to nine months imprisonment which has been suspended for a year.

Speaking on behalf of his client, defending council, Danny Moore, said: "It is to her great shame she finds herself in court. She appeared to have left this sort of thing behind."

While acknowledging that Ausen was spared impisonment, the court heard that: "Offences of this nature are to be taken seriously. The offence normally attracts a sentence of imprisonment of some length."
