A man has been arrested and held under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act following the sexual assault of a young woman in Dublin’s St. Stephen’s Green yesterday afternoon.

The incident, which occurred at approximately 2.30 pm in the city’s famous landmark, has resulted in the hospitalisation of a woman who is reported to be in her mid-twenties.

According to reports, the young woman was lured to the scene of the crime before being rescued by a man who works within the horse-drawn carriage trade of the park.

Hearing her scream, the individual raced to her aid before the assailant was eventually apprehended by Gardaí having been discovered hiding in bushes in the vicinity of the crime.

Commenting on the shocking event, local Independent councillor, Mannix Flynn, appealed to the public to be aware of potential dangers, saying: “People need to be vigilant, there are predators out there and people who want to commit crime and people who want to assault people. This is horrendous. It’s deeply traumatic and upsetting for a person.”

A technical examination was conducted at the scene of the crime yesterday afternoon and Gardaí are now appealing to witnesses to come forward.

It is understood the assailant is known to Gardaí
